Just a short query. Is there anyone who can give me more information about the use of video-disc technology for mass-storage. I just read an article which claims that the entire Library of Congress collection would fit onto 100 discs ( ~$2000 ). With a good directory and a backup retrieval system, I could have all this information available for <$10K!!! Has anyone tried a database where the entities were pages on such a system. My understanding of Telidon/Videotex/etc. is that they are based on a tree hierarchy of such pages. However, the tree must be crafted by skilled artisans and so such systems are unlikely to become cost effective. Has anyone thought about a more realistic retrieval system based on author, title, subject, and keyword indices? How expensive would such a system be? Answers should be posted to the net, but commentary should be mailed to me. If there is enough commentary, I will summarize it and post it as a single article. --- stephen perelgut --- --- decvax!utzoo!utcsrgv!perelgut ---
