To: FOLKS INTERESTED IN WRITEAID. I haven't forgotten you! It's just that I received rather more inquiries about the program than I had anticipated, and it has taken a while to reach the crest of the mail heap. I've attached a document which I've sent to our local system maintainer here at the University of Denver. I want to move the program from my directories into our /usr/users/public directory area, and I needed to let him know how many files are to be moved and their approximate size. Now you will have an idea of what Writeaid looks like, at least from the computer's perspective! About posting. That may not be as good an idea as I had originally thought. As you can see, Writeaid is as sprawling as the Kansas prairies (it is, after all, a prototype, and is *supposed* to be messy), and posting something like this to the net would be a logistical nightmare, particularly as you would have to run most of the files through a compiler. If the system is delivered on tape, just create a directory called /usr/users/public (and subdirectories as noted), dump in the tape's contents, and you are well on your way. At least, that's how it looks in theory. Secondly, if further research on *dissemination* of Writeaid is to be done, and particulary on what modifications it undergoes as it approaches Nirvanah, then some control over release must be maintained. Hence, the current leanings towards mailings of the system on tape. PLEASE let me know further of your thoughts on this. Sorry to make such a big deal of this, but the logistical issues are rather problematical at the moment, but not insurmountable by any means. As soon as the intial set of tests are completed (end of May), we will move the files into our own /usr/users/public in late June or early July. Very soon after that, I will post more info on distribution. I would like to have the thing working REALLY well, as well as additional materials supplied by our faculty here, in place before shipment. What I will post to net.research within the next week or so are copies of the Student's Manual and the Teacher's Manual. They provide more detailed info about how Writeaid operates. Many of the faculty here are quite interested in Writeaid, and are cooperating quite nicely with efforts to give it a full series of tests under fire. These results will be summarized and also posted to net.research by summer. Till later, Art Winterbauer "If guns are outlawed, only Univ. of Denver communists will have underwear!"
