>I have a friend who is looking for schools that offer courses or that do >research in the fields of psychic phonomena or the paranormal. >Please reply via the net thank you. I have the following in my files: American Society for Psychical Research, Inc. 5 West 73rd Street, New York N.Y. 10023 Telephone: 799-5050 Area Code: 212 Revised April 1983 9th Edition COURSES AND OTHER STUDY OPPORTUNITIES IN PARAPSYCHOLOGY Information about courses (credit and non-credit), seminars, graduate study -- at colleges and other educational centers, in the United States, Canada and overseas. TO ORDER: Write to Department of Public Information and Education, ASPR, enclosing $3.50 and a self-addressed #10 envelope. Foreign orders: $4.00 in U.S. funds paid on a U.S. bank. I suspect the price is still accurate (I have not noticed any updates in their Newsletter for example), but cannot guarantee it. The ASPR is a very reputable organization, it was founded 100 years ago this year by William James (among others). They publish one of the two major American parapsychology journals, the Journal of the ASPR. Probably the most outstanding educational opportunity is the Summer Study Program at the Institute for Parapsychology in Durham, North Carolina. The Institute for Parapsychology is affiliated with the Foundation for Research in the Nature of Man. They were both founded by the late Dr. J.B. Rhine. (They publish the other major American parapsychology journal, the Journal of Para- psychology) The cost for the eight week program was (in 1984 anyway) $400, with some work-study available. For more information on the Summer Study Program and its current status write: SSP, Institute for Parapsychology, Box 6847, College Station, Durham, North Carolina, 27708. Rex Stanford has some articles giving detailed advice to anyone contemplating a career in Parapsychology, but I was unable to find the citation. If I find it I will forward it, but it boils down to preparing for a career in a related field and combining your research with parapsychology research. There are VERY few positions explicitly in parapsychology (I would say less than 20) in the country, and most of them were created by people doing exactly what Stanford recommends, then finding ways to make the non-parapsychological part of their research go away. If your friend can manage it I would recommend that they attend the annual Parapsychology Association (the PA is the major professional organization for parapsychologists) Meeting. It will be held here in Boston (actually at Tufts in Medford) this summer, August 12-16. Details may be obtained from the ASPR at the address above.
