I have some definate felings on things you should look for: 1. AAD's - These little boxes will activate a reserve parachute if you are falling too fast ( ~60 ft/sec ) too close to the ground ( ~1000 ft ). They are expensive for the school, but I HIGHLY recommend them. 2. USPA Center or Club Affiliation - The United States Parachute Association does a decent job of monitoring drop zones. They are not perfect, but who is? This is not to say that schools without the affiliation are no good, but why not stay with the national organization. 3. Insure your instructor and jumpmaster are USPA rated. 4. In the event of a malfunction, I prefer cut-aways ( or break-aways ) from the main canopy with automatic reserve activation, e.g. Stevens Cutaway System. (I am sure this will start a flurry or arguments). The USPA is located outside of Washington DC, and they can let you know of any centers near you. I did not bring the phone number into work, but I will post it if anybody asks for it.
