Okay, netlanders, I've got some questions that I've always been wanting to ask but always felt too foolish to. The jargon of those who jump from perfectly good airplanes for no apparent reason is rich, and I'm still uncertain of the meanings of some terms: a 'Boogie' -- Is this just another term for an organized getting together of jumpers for sport and competition? a 'freak jump' -- Apparently some method of falling. Is this the 'human badminton birdie' negative arch position? a 'dirt dive' -- I THINK this means practicing RW maneuvers on the ground. If not, it sounds painful. Could someone please clue in a novice jumper so I too will be able to toss these terms around? Also, if you are familiar with any other bizarre skydiving expressions, I'd be interested in hearing them (along with definitions, please) _____________________________________________________________________ -Pablo (formerly: pablo@dartvax, currently: ...uw-beaver!teltone!dataio!helens!dcohn, futurely: ???) >a 'Boogie' -- Is this just another term for an organized getting together of >jumpers for sport and competition? It can also be used as a verb: "I boogied on down to the formation" >a 'freak jump' -- Apparently some method of falling. Is this the >'human badminton birdie' negative arch position? A freak dive is doing CONTROLLED RW on your back. It's fun - but it takes lots of practice. >a 'dirt dive' -- I THINK this means practicing RW maneuvers on the ground. >If not, it sounds painful. Absolutely correct. A Mystery dive, on the other hand, has no dirt dive. The participants read about their part in the dive off a scrap of paper on jump run. >Could someone please clue in a novice jumper so I too will be able to toss >these terms around? Also, if you are familiar with any other bizarre skydiving dump - Open your parachute. "I dumped at three grand" snivel - What a slow opening parachute does. - A way of getting on a good load. dead spider - Someone negative arching below a formation. floater - A slow-falling skydiver. Exits first and flies UP to formations. funnel - The collapse of a formation. down the mine - ditto. trash pack - fast way to pack a parachute. Mr Bill - One jumper holds on to the other through opening. Then climbs up and stands on his shoulders. Then backloops off - everybody "Oh noooo..Mr Bill" -- Made in New Zealand --> Brent Callaghan AT&T Information Systems, Lincroft, NJ {ihnp4|mtuxo|pegasus}!poseidon!brent (201) 576-3475
