Sorry--I forgot that some states (notably California) continue to require catalytic converters on the fuel-injected Rabbits. My '78, bought in Michigan, contains no converter; the '76 I had before its untimely demise had the converter's guts removed by the dealer during a n*15000-mile service because VW claimed that the converter "had no noticeable effect and was therefore unnecessary." This was true probably only in the limited context of states with less stringent anti-pollution laws.
