A good game to try by net would be GDW's En Guard. It is well suited to play by mail and can be fun. If you have never played it, it is a game of role playing in the Three Musketeers era. The primary object of the game is to raise your social level as high as possible. This is done by getting status points equal to three times your current level in one month (if you fail to get equal to your level you drop a level). You get status points for mistresses, which clubs you belong to, your position etc.

Duels would still be a little messy but not too bad if the people involved were near each other. This is true because the rules outside of the dueling system which probably motivated the game are oriented towards slow and steady social climbing.
