According to THE POLYHEDRON, official newsletter for TSR's RPGA (Role Playing Game Association), issue 2 or 3, gaze weapons are treated as normal attacks (ie, one/round, roll to hit using head AC). I personally use the following as well: If head is averted: No chance of gaze hitting, but -4 on all attacks, -4 on AC. (These are pretty standard rulings; -4 to hit is what happens when you can't see something, -4 AC is what happens when you can't see an attack coming.) If a petrifying gaze hits someone, their belongings do **NOT** turn to stone. (I picked this up when a tourney-master had my belonging stoned when I was hit by a medusa, cf. below) If an illusionary medusa gazes, you don't turn to stone, you only think you do. You go into a catatonic state, needing no food etc, and can only be brought out as if you had actually been stoned! (Your belongings will not change, either ; the tournament medusa was an illusion! So, just because my character believes an illusion of a medusa, my armor, magic items, &c, do so also!) Hope this helps. Uncle Walker long-time DM RPGA # W0362C
