Traveller is offered by Game Designer's Workshop of Normal, IL. The basic set is ~$12 by now. Rule book 4, Mercenary, and 5, High Guard, are extra for $5.98 each. There is a Deluxe basic set (not worth it) for ~$20 and a hardcover (excellent for beginners or vets. best buy) for ~$15. It has a good hand combat system that is expanded into excellent with the addition of "snapshot" for ~$6. "Ashanti High Lightening" is a revision of this for ~$24 (one of GDW's few turkeys). The game proposes a universe with ftl but no other communications than as carried by ship. Players role for 6 characteristics (2d6, all traveller is d6), then role through a career. After leaving their career for one reason or another the strike out adventuring. Their are no levels. A players ability to perform actions is determined by a players "skills". Skills are aquired during the career phase for the most part. GDW offers a few gaming aids at reasonable prices. All of their equipment is top quality printing and stock. Usefulness is subjective.
