If you think the combat rules for AD&D is bad, take a look at those for Top Secret (also TM by TSR) In this game, it is possible to kill someone by a pistol shot to the hand while it is very easy to survive a 10-gauge shotgun blast to the head! I'd be interested in hearing if anyone has come up with some better procedures for Top Secret, as the rules for weapon encounters are far too skimpy and unrealistic and those for hand-to-hand combat are much too complicated and also, in the end, unrealistic (killing a person in one punch is much too simple)
