[net.games.frp] An intresting problem

I have a different problem, but this one requires the DM to provide
the answer and the player to present the problem. The goal for the
player is to see if a character (first level thief - chaotic hopefully)
can steal an entire town from the DM. If your still curious read on....

The basic idea is to use two characters: one to be introduced well
before the second character. The first characters goal is to go adventuring
and stuff but also to learn about the town he/she is in. After he/she
knows a good bit about the town he/she starts telling stories. These
stories can be fictional/real or whatever. Amoung the stories your character
tells he/she has a favoriate story of the anchient history of the town
he/she is in. This story is about the time before the current goverment
got into ruling, and it includes about how fantastic the town was
up until some war/raid on the town by some other group (maybe even
the ruling goverment!). During the raid it is described as most of
the ruling family was killed but one (or more(!)) of the heirs to the
throne of the town got away. Notice:include a discription of some type
of a family symbol or crest or something and have this symbol lost
after the raid/war/? .

About a month (real time) of having your character tell stories on
his/her off time, Introduce a new character into the campaign.
This new character is your first level thief!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Have this new character walk into town and ask then have him declair
that he is of the royal line of the town from before it was over-run.
Also, this character should have with him/her a replica of the lost
family seal/crest or whatever.

At this point many different things could happen to your second
character. You may be promoted to king (I wonder how much experiance(sp?)
you get for stealing a whole town?), you could be killed as an
imposter (he/she was only a first level thief - no real lost),
the people may accept you/reject you, the goverment may accept you/reject
you, the military may accept you/reject you...
By allowing so many possibilities, this stragity may just stop the
game for the night...

In any event, the DM has a problem with no easy solution.

If you were my DM and I tried the above on you, What would you do ?
Please respond by mail if you have an answer.
