[net.games.frp] Hit Dice, Spells in Melee

tim@unc.UUCP (Tim Maroney) (10/19/83)

Please do not ask AD&D questions to this group if they are completely
handled in Gygax's set of rules. One person asked about the hit dice of
monsters which are listed as having a fixed number of hit points; another
asked about spell casting during melee. Both questions are answered in
clearly labeled sections of the Dungeon Masters' Guide.

The answer to the first is that you divide the fixed hit points by 4.5, so
that you assume that the monster had exactly average hit dice. The answer
to the second depends on the situation, but there are procedures for
resolving the exact order of actions when it becomes necessary. In general,
the spell will be blown only if you take hit points of damage during the
casting period, or voluntarily interrupt the spell (for instance, to make a
saving throw or put up a psi defense).

It is hard for me to believe that anyone would try to run AD&D without
having read the entire DMG. It isn't THAT long....

Please don't listen to Tim. Ask any questions.

Many of us actually (gasp!) don't follow the might Gygax on every issue.
I personally take great liberties with the melee system, especially for
cases like an MU being charged by a fighter.
