The I.F.G.S (International Fantasy Gaming Society) is a group of about
400 people dedicated to the idea that as long as the players are having
a good time (safely), we can throw almost anything at them. The "Games"
last anywhere from one-half day mini-games to two-and-a-half day weekend
games.

The games consist of a "world" built by the Game Designer (GD), and a
situation where Player-Characters (PC's) are some-how 'thrown into'.
The PC's usually have a goal to achieve, and in the process, meet
various Non-Player Characters (NPC's) and monsters such as:
a sphinx, Kion Lord of Death, a magic stealer, the Gorge of Despair,
and the evil sorcerer Count Iblis the Unfathomable.

Everyone is welcome to play, (personally I think an NPC role is best for
a new player) and the rule book is ~ 60 pages and stresses safety above
all. The combat system stresses safety and uses foam "weapons" that
are tested before being allowed in a game. Spells and arrow attacks are
simulated, but the system works well and affords a good time for every-
one.

The games have been getting more and more sophisticated, with better
special effects (paid for by the budget, contributions, and most of
all by the player fees - usually from $15 - $35). The Players gain
experience for their character based upon how well they role-played.
NPC's gain experience also and have the opportunity to play the role
once for each team (usually 4 - 8 teams per game).

It's a lot of fun for all involved - and gaining more members all the
time. Some people come from as far away as Illinois and South Dakota
for a weekend game. Our goal is to have groups based all around the
country - chapters of the IFGS, Inc. That's a big goal but looking
at the progress we've made in the last 2 years - I think it's possible.

For a good background to our goals - read the book "Dream Park"
by Larry Niven and Steven Barnes. It's a great story and shows what could
be possible if we all work together for our "dream".
