I've done a significant amount of cave exploration and mapping, and I can tell you that the speed you mention is really slow. Typically, one can survey .5 mile of REALLY OBNOXIOUS passage in 8 hours, without any strain. This sort of mapping includes the following. 1) Mark new survey station. 2) Measure distance from old station to new station and record. 3) Measure compass direction from old to new station, and record. <Typically to 1 degree or so> 4) Measure inclination from old station to new, and record. 5) Measure compass direction from NEW station to old, and record. 6) Measure inclination from new station to old, and record. 7) Draw in significant features of passageway in notebook, along with comments on wall/ceiling distances, etc. goto 1) That's a LOT more carefull than any dungeon mapper I know of, and it's also a lot faster. I'm not going to comment on the AD&D (TM TSR hobbies, ...)system, I don't run it any more, the movement problem is only ONE of the reasons. Viva la Rolemaster.
