A justification for devices which have both good and bad effects
is preventing others from using them. (booby trap)
The owner knows exactly what to do to in order to get results,
but the thief of the item stands a good chance of eliminating
himself.
I still think random-reward/penalty magic items are pointless.
(especially the ones where you pull a lever. I've SEEN em. honest! :-)
