bae@fisher.UUCP (Shiva the Destroyer) (11/17/84)

Ladies and Gentlemen,
Quite shortly, we shall be starting a PBM AD&D campaign. Preliminary
correspondence indicates that a fun time will be had by all. Any interested
parties, please respond AT ONCE, before things begin rolling.

bae@fisher.UUCP (Shiva the Destroyer) (11/20/84)

Ladies and Gentlemen,

We now have 14 people participating in our game, so I will
be able to break you up into groups according to alignment,
class, desired goals, and so on. Anyone who has not contacted
me already, feel free to make up a character and send him/her in.

To get the ball rolling, we all need characters to be generated.
You may have one or two characters.

	Please indicate to me:
Whether you wish to adventure as a group or individually
Whether you wish to loot/pillage fortified underground
defense installations (dungeons), muck around town
delving into politics, or traipse about the wilderness.
What level of play you prefer
		Your FRP experience

Here is the approved method of rolling up characters in my world:

	Abilities
	---------
	1) Roll 12d6.
	2) drop the lowest 3 dice
	3) group dice as you will to yield three ability scores
	4) repeat 1-3 to get another 3 scores
	5) Add racial bonuses
	6) assign your scores in whatever abilities you wish

	Psionics
	--------
	1) check for psionics
		a) you are eligible if Int, Wis, or Char >= 16
		b) base %chance of psionics =
			((Int - 16) * 5) + ((Wis - 16) * 3) + (Char - 16)
		c) bonus : +3% if elven, +4% if human
		d) roll and see!
	2) if you get psionics, tell me, and I will determine your abilities

	Class
	-----
Any character of any race can advance to any level of any class,
except for restrictions due to natural ability (ex: INT for MUs)

If you wish to be a non-standard class, please consult me. I
am sure we can work something out.

	Alignment
	---------
I am not one to take a stereotyped view of alignment roles. Hence:

A member of any race can belong to any alignment.

		Thieves can be any alignment.

Paladins can be any alignment. A paladin in my world is merely a
		devout follower of his/her diety.

Evil/Chaotic parties are assumed to be clever enough to not
be constantly trying to kill off members of their own party.
This is not to say that it doesn't happen, given sufficient
reason. Party loyalty is above alignment considerations in
most cases. Childish actions are not tolerated.

	Hit Points
	----------
A first level character is given the maximum possible hit points
for his class (ex: 10 for Fighter, 4 for MU), modified by CON,
	of course.

	Equipment
	---------
You all start out with 300GP. Have fun.

Magic Users may not wear armour.
	Thieves may wear only leather.
Assassins may wear anything they damn well please. (Of course, no
thieving will be allowed if you are wearing Plate Mail...)

Magic Users may use any weapon they wish.
Clerics may use a 'religiously appropriate' weapon.
Clerics please contact me, and I will give you a brief
run-down on religion in my campaign.
All others may use whatever is appropriate.

	Weapons Proficiencies
	---------------------
Characters start out with the initial number of proficiencies,
	+1 for being first level.

Proficiencies are used in the following manner:
	1-3 profs in a weapon = +1hit/+1damage
	4-6 profs in a weapon = +2hit/+2damage
	7-9 profs in a weapon = +3hit/+3damage
		and so on.

You thus have the choice of specializing in a weapon, or learning
	a broad array of weapons.

Characters who have racial weapons bonuses actually have the middle
number of proficiencies necessary to attain the specified plus.
Ex: elves have +1 with longbow = 2 proficiencies.

	Magic
	-----
Spell users contact me, and I will send you spell books.

	Other
	-----
Please send me copies of your characters ASAP. Some of you
may qualify for special abilities, based on your base
abilities, your class, your luck, and how soon you
respond to this letter :-) :-)

If you already have characters you wish me to allow to enter
the game, please send me a copy of their specs. for judgment
	ASAP.

If you have any questions, please feel free to call me, or
	to drop a line.

How can I reach you from ucbvax? Do you have an arpa address? The mailer
software here has no idea where any of the mentioned vaxes are.

This sounds like a good idea of a game, but it's NOT D&D!!! You
have ridden roughshod over the game balance factors of D&D. Not that you
shouldn't, mind you, but keep the names straight.

I agree with Pete Hardie, this PBM game is not AD&D.

(MINOR FLAME) On the other hand, sending neat spell lists out net-wide
without explaining the new spells should be punishable by consumption of
your twenty-sided dice by some convienient domesticated animal.
Being a big Druid fan, I can't help but tremble at the power of the
  _Summon_Nature_ spell.
