[net.games.frp] Game Variants summary #2

req@snow.UUCP (Russell Quin) (05/01/85)

Here are some of the responses to my article about game variants. I asked
which frp system people used; I have already sent a summary of people's
alterations to AD&D and other major propriatory game systems -- what follows
relates to other systems. As before, I'll be happy to answer questions. Not
all pathnames are given, because some of them had garbled headers, possibly a
result of a re-router.
Please send discussion of related ideas to req@snow.UUCP and include "FRPList"
in the subject line if it relates to the mailing list.

From fkc@snow.UUCP:
The new system (tentative name `G-system') is entirely skill-based, with even
descriptive stats being skills, similar to the usual concept.
So far, the entire mechanics can simply be expressed on one side of
A4, and this includes: skill definition, improvement, inter-dependancy, using
skills for tasks, non-explicit and default skills, application to non-humans,
non-linear progression, maximum skill levels, energy/fatigue system and a time
and motion system. (of course the names are shorter on the paper - but it
still looks hopeful.)

If all goes according to plan I should tie-up `Hexworld' for a while at the
end of this term, and start a playtest of G-system in a new campaign next
term. What the background for the new campaign will be, I'm unsure - I'm
undecided between a superhero game, and one pinched from a book (again - a
choice). At least it shows how versatile the system is.

>Who out there has designed his/her own system ?
I have, or at least I am working on one. As soon as I can get
a decent Word Processing system at home I will do more with it.

[Various people at kent (ukc):]

The more experienced dungeon masters here [tcdmath] are Dennis Murry
(mcvax!ukc!tcdmath!dennis) and Alan Sexton (mcvax!ukc!tcdmath!alan).
There are two others started this year: Ronan Bradley (...tcdmath!rbradley)
[...] and Graham Wills (...tcdmath!gwills)
Alan intends to post articles in future but Dennis couldn't be bothered.
His system is so non-standard that it would take ages to explain it all.
I might write you a summary of it's more esoteric points at
some stage.

I use my own RPG (Lands of Adventure), somewhat modified from the published
version but not very much. We currently have a Japanese campaign (set in
an alternate world 1281, Genghis Khan's second invasion attempt just landed
which is affecting the chance of appealing to the divine powers considerably
as they are somehat distracted) and a playtest of a fairytale Culture Pack.

LoA is a Skill-based system, somewhat more modular than RQ.
