I liked the idea of the ghost, D&D really isn't too strong on the Untangible Malign Force side of frping. One device I particularly enjoyed using, was silence... the party of intrepid explorers, with Sir Claud at their head, at last push open the door. A revolting stench assails their nostrils. In the dark room beyond the door, three heavily armed corpses are slumped on the floor. There are no other doors to the room. The party enters the room, and begins searching the bodies and walls. Suddenly their voices begin to die away. Soon their shouts can only faintly be heard. Then there is no sound at all. [ GM gets up and turns off the music, and insists that no one says anything, just indicating their actions by moving their figures] Then it appears: a dark grey, skeletal form is seen standing at the centre of the south wall. Slowly, so slowly it advances towards the centre of the room. Sir Claud is waiting. With a (silent) yell, he springs forward, and swings his +2 sword at the creature. But the blade meets no resistance, gliding through as if through air. While Sir Claud is off-balance, the creature reaches out and touches Sir Claud's arm. Agony flashes on his face, and with a (silent) scream he falls to the ground. [ another important NPC bites the dust ] The next round, all the PCs exhibit panic that I had never seen before, nor have I since. The atmosphere was absolutely magic. The room is vacated in seconds. -Nige Gale
