[net.games.frp] Traveller detection h/w wanted

You put your ship into orbit around Fenugreek III; you are looking for the wreck
of the Xinunix.  You also want to keep an eye open for incoming Imperium ships,
and your old rival Amberzone.

Has anyone got any descriptions of detection hardware for use with traveller?
This omission has always bugged me about the game!  Factors to take into
account are range, resolution, effect of intervening dust, cloud, radiation
etc., active vs. passive (can other people detect your search mechanism?),
size, weight, power required, tech level & price (and anything else you
find relevant).

While I'm about it, if anyone has descriptions of communications gear, 
particularly ship-to-ship, I'd be interested in that too.  Someone suggested
modulated lasers?  Similar factors apply.

What do I want to detect?  Ships, life, heat, various radiation, buildings,
subterranean tunnels, geological info, etc.  Anything that might be feasible,
really.
