The way I played zero hitpoints: if you had zero or below, you were unconcious, and -10 was death. If a character has negative hit points from wounds which would be judged to bleed, internally or externally, the character would loose a hitpoint per round more, while unconcious. Once hitpoints were over zero, conciousness was regained, but the character is in sad shape. This is where the interpretation comes in. How long does it take the character to be able to fight again? WE figured that, based on the one week rule, the character needs to rest right away. Being healed of all hitpoints (magically or otherwise) helps but does not remove the trauma of near-death. So a person who almost died, got a "heal" spell and rested for a couple of days under good conditions would be okay, but the same person who only got a couple of clw's would have to rest longer. If no healing is possible, except normal day-by-day healing, the person needs a lot of time. The person had better have most of his/her hitpoints back before running around again. Actually, this didn't always work well with characters with many hit points (who take forever to heal) so I just decided on a period of time or number of hitpoints. Fast and loose. That's the way to play it. How long do you think you would take to get better if you were about to go to a higher plane? Another confused opinion from the mad druid.
