geoff@utcs.uucp (Geoff Collyer) (02/11/86)
Ian Darwin used to be head of the UNIX group (and my boss) within the University of Toronto Computing Services (nee Computer Center). He recently quit and we need someone to replace him. The job is about half programming and half managing. We are looking for someone who knows his way around UNIX, including the kernel, is competent to modify same and yet likes going to meetings and dealing with bureaucracy. Here are the relevant parts of the official job posting, with my comments in brackets: --- Salary Range: $35,160 - $41,370 - $47,580 Position Summary: Responsible for the planning, evaluation, implementation, testing and documentation of the UNIX operating system [to date this excludes System V] and its sub-components; analyzes and fixes specific problems. Responsible for several versions of UNIX on different computer makes and models [currently VAXen (including utcs), a PDP-11/70 (utcsstat), various tiny 11's and maybe a Cray some day]. Cordinates [sic] large projects as a project leader. Recommends enchancements [sic] to existing services; designs, tests, implements and documents modifications to operating and applications systems. Education: University degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering (or related topic) or equivalent experience needed [but bear in mind that Ian has a only Bachelor's degree in Spanish, so this is really what someone would like, not what we need]. Master's Degree preferred [we want someone competent]. Experience: Minimum of 5 year's experience is systems programming. Experience with the UNIX operating system at a system programming level is required. Skills: Ability to communicate concepts verbally and in writing. Demonstrated analytical ability, good judgement, tact, patience, determination and organizational skills are needed [i.e. you must like going to meetings, supervising one or two other systems programmers, and dealing with a large bureaucracy]. --- I should further add that we unofficially prefer non-smokers (no one else in Systems smokes). If you are interested, contact Bill Lauriston (manager of Systems) at utzoo!utcs!willy or 416-978-3579. If you have further questions, you can ask Bill or me (utcs!geoff).
