root@helios.toronto.edu (Operator) (08/27/88)

The Physics/Astronomy/CITA Computing Consortium at the University of Toronto
has an immediate vacancy for a Systems Software Programmer, level I.

General Information: The Consortium owns and maintains a medium-sized facility
consisting of a VAX 11/780 and 7 MicroVAX-II's running VMS, as well as a
UNIX operation made up of a Sun 3/180 and Sun 4/280, with (currently)
ten Sun 3/50's served off the Sun 4. These systems are networked together
on two Ethernet segments, with excellent connectivity to the rest of the
campus and the outside world. Approximately 400 professors, graduate
students, and other researchers, as well as Departmental administrative
staff, use these facilities. The Consortium is presently in the process of
gradually migrating from VAX/VMS to the UNIX world.

Job Description: Under general direction, assists the systems manager in
daily operation of the VAX/VMS and Sun/UNIX computer systems. Maintains
the systems in the manager's absence. Assists in the implementation,
installation, testing, documentation, and support functions with respect
to operating systems software, programming languages, and layered products.
Assists in the maintenance and update of the software and documentation,
and to some extent the hardware. Performs most of the system-related
programming tasks on both UNIX and VMS. Deals with computer specialists and
service technicians. Serves as general advisor to the user community.

Qualifications:

Education: B.Sc., preferably in Computer Science or Engineering.

Experience: Two years' work experience in the computer field. UNIX
familiarity required, VMS experience an asset. Solid knowledge
of Fortran essential (95% of the programs here are written in
Fortran), knowledge of C an asset.

Other: Self-motivation and excellent time management skills are
essential. Must be adaptable and a quick learner in this
constantly evolving environment. Non-smoker preferred as
              this is a no-smoking building.

Salary: To be negotiated.

Other points of interest: Due to the fact that the present systems manager
expects to be leaving the University within 18 months, this programming
position offers excellent prospects for promotion in the short term, to
the individual who is capable of thoroughly learning all aspects of
maintaining the system in the interim.

The computing facility is located on the St. George campus in downtown
Toronto. Parking facilities are scarce due to ongoing construction, but
access by various public transit routes is excellent. The University offers
  an excellent benefits package.
