[ont.jobs] geac library division instructor position

cbs@geac.UUCP (Chris Syed) (12/30/88)

Geac Canada Limited is looking for an Instructor for its
Advanced Libraries Division. The person selected will be
responsible for customer training at client sites throughout
North America. The duties involve curriculum development, and
presenting structured courses in systems operation and
the use of the Geac Library Information System and
the Advance Library System. The position is based in Markham.

Geac has over 150 library installations, at major
universities and public libraries in Australia, Canada,
France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Sweden,
the United Kingdom, the United States and the Vatican.

The Instructor will train system administrators in all aspects
of system operation, applications setup and scheduling, and
will present terminal operation courses for our clients'
cataloguing, acquisitions, circulation and reference staff.

The ideal candidate will have a degree in Library and
Information Science from an ALA accredited institution,
as well as previous employment in library automation,
or the equivalent in education and experience - for example,
a degree in Computing or a related field, and past practical
   experience working in a library.

Knowledge of one or more computing languages, willingness
to attend adult education workshops, or experience in adult
education, and knowledge of Geac systems would be assets.

Excellent communication skills are mandatory, since the
Instructor must deal with all people of all administrative
ranks. In addition, the incumbent will be expected to travel
at least 50% of the time.

NB: Applicants should be aware that this job requires extensive
air travel throughout North America, frequent absences of up
to three weeks' duration, and frequent schedule changes.

As a personal note: I used to do this job. It's fun,
fascinating, it gets you to places like Logan Utah, Denton
Texas, and Spruce Grove, Alberta, as well as better known
places like the Smithsonian and MIT.

However, it involves lots of time on planes and even more
waiting in airports. If you don't know Chicago O'Hare now,
you'll know every hot dog stand there within a year.

It's a great job, but I don't want to mislead anyone - if
you have tight commitments in Toronto, this is not the job
       for you.
