SoftQuad Inc., the leader in UNIX-based production publishing software, needs a system administrator to look after a network of a dozen UNIX, MacIntosh and other small computers with a number of ascii terminals and a variety of laser printers. We are accepting applications both from experienced UNIX system administrators and from potential trainees who have a good general knowledge of UNIX including C programming. Recent graduate or near-graduates who have taken UofT's CSC209 and cut their UNIX teeth on the UofT's UNIX systems should consider applying as potenial trainees, as should anyone with similar experience. It's no exaggeration to say that the most important personal skills are persistence, organization, responsibility, tact, and the ability to understand and solve new problems. We can teach you the technical aspects of running a UNIX system, but if you are the type who fails to follow up on problems (every day if necessary) until they are resolved, or who comes apart under the pressures of working in a small, interesting but sometimes hectic organization, it won't work out. But if you can keep yourself organized, work well despite interruptions, aren't afraid to wield a screwdriver occasionally, and can do so without destroying hardware, send me your resume. If you're not sure what a UNIX system administrator does, here's a partial unordered list (like all UNIX documentation, it's perennially out of date): - back up user and system data onto tapes, and occasionally restore files - monitor disk space and usage - monitor network and dialup connections - connect and debug terminal and printer connections - install software and (simple) hardware upgrades - write and debug printer interfaces and other system interface software - worry about electronic mail (B.S. in Mailer Science optional) and news - lie awake at night worrying about computer security - troubleshoot all problems related to systems, including calling vendors for service as needed If you think you've got it, tell me why. Send your resume to Ian Darwin, ian@sq.com, SoftQuad Inc, 720 Spadina Avenue, Toronto M5S 2T9, or as a last resort call me at 416-963-8337.
