[ont.jobs] "Systems Facilitator" job at LSUC

dave@lsuc.uucp (David Sherman) (03/16/89)

(Don't you love meaningful job titles? :-)

We're looking for someone to help run our computer systems
at the Law Society of Upper Canada's Computer Education Facility.
The job summary is "Maintenance, administration and
support for computer systems in the Department of Education".
There is a long job description, but I'm not going to post it here.

We have a bunch of UNIX systems (this Perkin-Elmer beast with
educational source license, a CT Miniframe and some AT&T 3B2
machines), as well as a classroom full of PCs, some Macs and other
miscellaneous hardware. We need help maintaining it all, helping
students, assisting staff, making minor programming changes to
staff systems, creating badly-needed documentation, ordering
supplies, setting up and testing new equipment, doing backups
and various kinds of troubleshooting. If you like playing with
computers and you like variety, this may be the job for you.
(No, lsuc!keith isn't leaving; we just need to clone him.)

Skills/Knowledge required (some of this can be learned on-site):
	- MS-DOS
	- UNIX, including shell programming
	- Empress database management software (can be learned)
	- C programming (at least for minor changes)
	- communications device fiddling (we have lots of communications
		equipment)
	- "good interpersonal skills" (yeah, they all say that, but
you do need to deal with a lot of students and staff)
	- (should I put in what it says here about "ability to work
under pressure"? Naaah, they don't mean it:-)

This is actually a fun place to work; not only are the people
generally nice, but you get to work in a Real Historic Tourist
Attraction. (For those who haven't been here, Osgoode Hall is
really quite worth seeing in all its grandeur.) Central location
on the subway, too.

If you're interested, drop me a line or send me a CV, preferably
via email. Postal, if you must, is c/o Computer Education Facility,
Law Society of Upper Canada, Osgoode Hall, Toronto M5H 2N6. (Yep,
we can get away without a street address, though it's 130 Queen St. West
if you want it.)

(I posted this back in March, but we're still looking. Any takers?)

Skills/Knowledge required (some of this can be learned on-site, and
only half the tasks are to be done by the new person we hire):
	- MS-DOS and applications
	- UNIX, including shell programming
	- Empress database management software (can be learned)
	- C programming (at least for minor changes)
	- communications device fiddling (we have lots of communications
equipment: modems, X.25 PADs, StarLAN, PACX)
	- teaching ability
	- "good interpersonal skills" (yeah, they all say that, but
you do need to deal with a lot of students and staff)
	- (should I put in what it says here about "ability to work
under pressure"? Naaah, they don't mean it:-)

The job has significant growth potential into what might best
be called technical management, down the road as our facilities
continue to expand.
