Alias Research Corp., a computer graphics firm in Toronto, has several positions available in software research and development (mostly development). Alias Research has been in business for just over one year, and is currently undertaking the production of computer graphics workstations for the graphics and television arts. These workstations will be based on the new "Geometry Engines" from Stanford's Jim Clarke, a RISC-architecture fast processor, and a 68010-based UNIX machine. The positions available include: 1) a UNIX "guru" -- persons applying have to be qualified system programmers with extensive UNIX experience (BSD 4.1c, 4.2 and/or System V). This person will be responsible for managing our minicomputer facility (including a Gould SEL 9005), writing support material (device drivers, etc) and changing the UNIX kernel where appropriate. 2) a User Interface specialist -- persons applying must have demonstrable abilities in the area of writing software for menu systems, I/O analysers, and general man-machine interaction. This person will be responsible for writing software to an exsiting design spec. for a 3D graphics and animation system in a 24-bit frame-buffer environment. 3) a real-time systems Specialist, with some knowledge of User Interface -- persons applying must have experience in message passing or semaphore systems in a real-time mc68k environment, and be comfortable with Ikonas-style bit-slice processors. 4) a Surface Modeller -- persons applying must have some knowledge in the areas of CSG, boundary representation, Boolean Operators and triangulation. This person wil be responsible for writing the software that models 3D objects, including parametric bi-cubic patches, quadric surfaces, polygonal meshes and Fournier, Fussel, Carpenter fractal surfaces (experience in solid modelling is not essential). These 4 positions are available immediately, and there are several others opening in the near future for programmers experienced in UNIX and C, who have some knowledge of computer graphics. Salaries range from $30k to $40k, with a good benefits package. Good communication skills and a knowledge of operating system principles are important. 3. UNIX, C Programmer (Programming Language Products) HCR has a range of language products which run on many UNIX machines. The position involves porting, debugging, and developing these pro- ducts on many different computers such as the IBM RT PC, the HP 9000/840, the Convex C1, AT&T 3Bs and 6300+, IBM mainframes, etc. The successful candidate will have strong C programming skills, good communication skills and UNIX experience, as well as an interest in programming languages.
