The project:
------------
Nixdorf Computer (Canada) Ltd. has embarked on a substantial software
development project to develop an image-oriented data acquisition and
management system for large numbers of documents and other data.
[Large in this context means 10,000 to 100,000,000 items, occupying one
to several hundred gigabytes of random-access data.] The system will
cohere high-speed optical scanners, optical character recognition (OCR)
subsystems, workstations, high performance laser printers, wide area
networks, and an assortment of computers. The software will run on a
range of systems under various flavours of the UNIX operating system,
on hardware ranging from 80386-class single nodes to networked multiple
nodes of multiprocessor systems.
The requirements:
-----------------
We have a need for several more (four to eight) software developers
as soon as we can get them, with more possibly required later.
Our shopping list:
- a minimum of two years C development experience in a UNIX environment
- optical (WORM) disc exposure
- document scanning and digital storage
- image processing and relevant data compression methods
- optical character recognition from raster images
- experience on the internal workings of large data management systems
- X-window application experience
- knowledge of object-oriented programming and techniques
- experience in interprocess communications (sockets, shared
memory, message queues, pipes, signals, etc.)
- exposure to distributed processing with networked Unix
systems (NFS, RFS, Ethernet, etc.)
Clearly, we aren't going to find many people who satisfy *all* of the above!
However, any of the above would be an asset (and the first one is mandatory).
The company:
------------
Nixdorf Canada (a subsidiary of Nixdorf Computer A.G.) has been based
in Toronto since 1977. We are expanding rapidly (from our current size
of 100 employees), due in part to this development project. We offer a
competitive compensation and company-paid benefits package,
commensurate with experience.
