Using a string no doubt works but why not etch your own alignment marks that you can trust onto the swing arm. What I have done in the past is to check the factory marks and fix them if necessary. The way to do this is measure the distance from the center of the swingarm bolt to the marks. Naturally, the distances should be the same on both sides, if they are not make the marks on one side match the other, simple! your friendly cycle hacker 8v} seismo!tiberio

Related to aligning the chain, I've found that having a friend step down hard on the brake while I'm retightening the axle nut ensures that the brake shoes will be centered on the drum. I'm not surprised that Triumphs don't have alignment marks. For the longest time I was convinced that they didn't come with mufflers. -- ken perlow ..ihnp4!ihuxq!ken bell labs @ naperville, IL
