We all seem to have our personal preferences, so
I might as well throw mine in too.
Nava II for the street (full coverage, keeps the bugs
off your face and the visor works real good at
various angles for different speeds and required
air intake).
Bell Super Magnum for dirt racing (open design, but equiped
with visor, goggles and chin guard). I feel it is
more necessary in the dirt to use goggles instead
of a shield because no shielded helmet can stop the
dust from getting in your eyes.

For the past couple of years I have used--and been reasonably pleased
with--a full-face DOT helmet that is apparently quite rare in these parts
(So. CA). It is a CP-3, made in W. Germany by Romer/Porsche Design. I
purchased mine locally for around $165. I don't know what role Porsche AG
had in the design of the helmet... styling, perhaps--it's a distinctive,
"spacey"-looking helmet. I bought it primarily for the faceshield design;
for my tastes, I've never found another I like as well.
Pro:
-Good faceshield design: 0.125" Lexan, detented, adjustable with
one gloved hand, rotates into recessed slot (protected from
scratches, bugs, etc), removable w/o tools, good field of view,
good with glasses, quiet, available in clear and grey tint.
-Comfortable: lightweight shell (polycarbonate), good chinstrap
(double, padded), adjustable "flow-thru" ventilation.
Con:
-Godawful padded velour shell liner that will give you a "natural"
hairdo if you don't already have one.
Rider Magazine did a test on the CP-3 in the July 81 issue.
