[net.cycle] BMW R65

Does anybody out there have any experience with the BMW R65
vibration problem, starts at about 4500rpm ?
Does anybodyknow if BMW has plans to provide a retrofit fix
anytime in the near future ?

There have been several discussions of the vibration in "BMW News", the
magazine of the BMW Motorcycle Owners Association. The suggested fix
is to put rubber spacers on the engine moutine bolts. The June 1984
issue has this to say:

Rubberized Spacers sometimes used as engine vibration dampeners on the
R65 are available from Jesse Fowler (Mid-Michigan Cycle)at $20 per
set. The term engine vibration dampeners is really a misnomer, since
you are really dealing with frame harmonics here rather than engine
imbalance; you cannot cure the problem with engine balancing techniques.

These spacers consist of a hard rubber buffer sandwiched between and
firmly fastened to two steel washers. They replace the 8mm metal spacers
on the front engine mount on the R65; one of them is notched to clear
    the oil filter cover.

I happen to have an R65, and it certainly does vibrate. All the same, it
is a relatively small range (about 4250-4750 on my bike), and I find that,
when I do use the engine in this range, I am merely on my way out to 5000.
By riding this way, I find that the vibration is hardly a great annoyance.
Because the R65 has the famous boxer's torque from below 3500, I rarely
go above 4000 in the city, and I like to keep the rpms up when riding
through the canyons.

If you don't already belong to the BMW Motorcycle Owners of America,
a check for $15 sent to

	BMWMOA
	P.O. Box 128

will bring you many benefits, including receipt of the monthly
"BMW News." There have been a number of articles in this magazine's
technical section dealing with this vibration problem. Dave Parker
has published step-by-step instructions, using parts from automobile
applications, to modify the engine mounts on the R-65. I don't have
my back issue reference library handy (we're moving our household),
but Dave's address is:
