After hearing all this discussion about polishing faceshields, I would like to put in a good word for goggles. I use plastic safety glasses, sold in most hardware stores; the best kind are made by Norton (no relation to MC maker), for about $2.00. The ones made by American Optical seem flimsier. The wrap-around ones that fit snug against your face are terrible (scratch easily and very uncomfortable in hot weather). The Norton goggles are cheaper than faceshields or replacement lenses for most of the goggles made by Scott and others, and they don't get scratched up as quickly. The great thing about their low cost is that you replace them as soon as they are AT ALL scratched. This is an excellent safety feature: there is nothing more dangerous than riding in the rain at night against oncoming traffic with scratched plastic obstructing your vision. (There also are nice "safety" glass goggles made by Uvex and Climax, that never scratch, but I wonder just how "safe" the glass is ?) Goggles are also a hell of a lot more comfortable than faceshields, especially in hot weather. So try goggles and throw out that scuzzy old bubble shield! You'll be glad you did.

I just came back from a weekend trip up to Cottage Country. Having seen at least one rather large bug splatter across my face-shield, I can't imagine how goggles can possibly compare with a full-face helmet. (Not to mention the added protection afforded if your face ends up colliding with a large, inanimate object.) Anyone with a good reason for skimping on face protection?
