I'm not surprised that someone responded to my plug for goggles as opposed to faceshields by suggesting that they are "skimping on protection". First: certainly they don't provide the measure of accident protection a face-shield does, but if you wear a full-face helmet this consideration becomes irrelevant. Regarding protection against bugs and crud during normal riding, I have never felt overly exposed by just wearing goggles (this from a rider in bug-infested North Carolina). Second: the best way to avoid injury in an accident is to not have the accident; judging by most (if not all) of the face shields I have seen, the superior vision and comfort afforded by wearing (good) goggles is a significant aid in this quest.
