I have recently gotten my motorcycle permit. I have not ridden yet, and I figured the first thing to do is to get a helmet. I visited several dealers and talked to each about what made a helmet that is $150. more protective than one that is $69. One person told me that the fiberglass helmet ($150.) was more protective because it will crack on hard impact, absorbing more energy and also giving an indication that it needs to be replaced. This helmet is also "snell" approved (another dealer told me this was only significant for racing). He said the less expensive helmet (made of plastic?? of some type), whould bend on impact, and bend back. It would not absorb the same amount of energy, and worse, you could not tell that it was damaged. Both of these helmets were "Nova", which seems to be a popular brand. Almost everyone I talked to agreed that they were lighter and less noisy than the "Bell". A helmet is something I do not want to fool with; I am willing to spend $150. if it is actually going to give me more protection. If not, why spend the extra money (let alone carry the extra weight on my head; the fiberglass is much heaver!). Please send responses by mail, I will post the answers in a synopsis. Thanks. __________________ Scott J. Foster AT&T Bell Laboratories Piscataway, NJ {eagle, allegra, cbosgd, ihnp4}!pyuxbb!sjf
