I think that it is much more accurate to say that motorcyclists
generally don't wave in the L.A. area -- we're too busy staying
out of the way of that Trans Am that's about to cut us off. I
often find that riders wave to me across a wide median strip and
3 lanes of freeway on my regular trips to Riverside (80 miles
east of L.A.). My experiences in Europe indicate that even the
motor cops there will wave back, if you wave to them! (In L.A.
they pull you over and write you up for interfering with an
officer :-).

You mean you'd consider taking a vacation without your bike? :-)

>I feel I'm saying "Hello there, bro'/sis, I'm a motorcyclist too"

Have you noticed the different ways people will wave? I personally
give the old "V" -- perhaps I'm showing my age, but for me it
conveys "Go in peace, fellow rider".  Others hold up a clenched fist;
"Solidarity", maybe? The friendly wave is the most common, though.
I've also seen the thumbs up, especially in Britain. In general,
I think that it is the result of a small population that feel they must
stick together in the face of oppression ( :-) / 2 ).

It has been suggested that a universal way of indicating problems is to
place your helmet on the ground beside your disabled machine. (Well,
almost universal, not everyone uses a helmet...)
