<not enough salt in this line> It used to be fairly easy to rent motorcycles in L.A., although they were generally smaller machines. However, a few years ago, California started requiring cyclists to have a motorcycle license, in addition to a regular (automobile) license. Since then, the number of cycle rental establishments has seriously declined because most people who have the motorcycle license already have a motorcycle, or know somebody who has one. As to the possibility of avoiding L.A. freeways and merely riding around the countryside, this is probably somewhat impractical, unless you have a lot of time (even on the freeways, it takes quite awhile to get out of the city). If you do have time, I would suggest that you go north to Santa Barbara or south to San Diego, so that you aren't left with the impression that all of California is like L.A. In any case, I hope you have a nice visit, and the weather should be nice. Jim Michael {ihnp4,decvax,akgua,dcdwest,ucbvax}!sdcsvax!noscvax!jmichael.
