i already posted personally to the person asking about a good replacement for non-leather jackets. (i agree with denim), but i also read the posting by the person who said he also used a nylon jacket. for those of you who care, we learned in the motorcycle rider course that nylon was definitely the worst thing to wear while biking because if you take a spill and slide along, the friction will meld the nylon to your skin. my aunt, an emergency room nurse, also verified that she has seen this, (among other things we riders don't like to think about). so, for those of you who know that an accident is not necessarily going to be your fault, i would definitely *not* recommend nylon as an alternative. safe riding ... becky

A recent posting on this topic indicated that the Motorcycle Safety Foundation advises against nylon. The reason given is that nylon can melt due to heat induced by friction (as in sliding along the pavement), and the melting nylon can cause burns and infection. We (I am an MSF-certified instructor) do NOT suggest avoiding nylon; just don't wear unlined nylon with no underlayer. A nylon jacket is fine, as long as it's lined with (for example) cotton, or worn over a long sleeved cotton shirt. In fact, many good rainsuits are made of treated nylon.
