    RE: SHOCKS
My wife recently purchased a Honda VT 500 Shadow. Last weekend while
on a trip we noticed considerable wobbling during cornering and somtimes on
uneven roads. I have reason to believe that better shocks would eliminate this
problem. Has any one had and fixed this problem? Is any one familiar with a
Marzocchi Strada gas shock? Is there another solution?

I doubt it is the shocks. I am experiencing this on my
83 Nighthawk 650, but I attribute it to tire wear and
unequal balancing/alignment. I am due for 8k maintenance
and and hoping the problems will totally disappear.

Which brings me to a question for all the wizened bikers
out there (except of course our friend at Bell who prefers
to be called a motorcycle enthusiast. -- a rose by any other
name....) Anyway, what's a good sport tire? I can't say
much for the Dunlops that my bike came with.

How much do you want to spend and how much performance do you require
versus wear? Personally, I like the Dunlop K391's, especially the "R"
compound. They don't wear as long as some, but they stick well.

A lot of racers swear by Pirelli Phantoms and Metzler Lazers. I have a
Michelin racing rain tire, but since it is still in the garage I can't
say how well it works. Most of the differences -- to a street rider
-- are moot. You probably don't drag your pegs around every corner
(or if you do you won't for long) so you might get by with a more mileage
oriented tire, such as the Dunlop 291's or Continentals. I haven't heard
anything about the new Conti Super Tires (or whatever the marketing types
call them) so I can't say much about them.

My best advice is to go down to your local race track, find someone with
the same bike you have, and ask them which tire works best for them.
You might also go to your local cycle shop and ask the parts guy if he
knows of any local go fast types and if so, what they use. Be aware
that he might try to sell you whatever tire he has in stock. Don't run
out of the store screaming for the consumers bureau, just tell him you
realize he is stuck with an unpopular tire and you'ld be willing to help
him out. Offer him about 60% of the marked price and you'ld be surprised
how many take it (that's a typical mark-up in the industry). If he has
been sitting on it for a while, he might even throw in a free mounting.

e: SPORT TIRES
D i agree with you Sean that the Dunlop tires on your bike are not what the should be. i purchased a set of Metzeler tires and was quite surprised at the handling. These tires are sensational! They are a little more expensive but well worth it. Also thanks for the info on shocks.

After years of using Continental RB2 front, K112 rear,
I am now using their new tires -- TK22 front, TK44 rear.
I was always satisfied with all aspects of the old types,
the new ones are impressive in making the bike feel lighter
and more nimble. No problems with sticking or braking in
rain, and allegedly 35% longer life than the old type,
which had satisfactory longevity to begin with.
