[net.cycle] Yamaha Fairing/Trunk quality

sajor@mhuxv.UUCP (SAJOR) (07/05/85)

I am the owner of a 1983 Yamaha Seca 750 (XJ750RK, for
number freaks)... This package (RK) was assembled in mid-to-end
83 as a final "goodbye" package for the Seca - the base Seca was
adorned with a Yamaha of Canada sport fairing, and trunk and
saddlebags. The machine has 13000 mi on it now, and the quality of the
basic motorcycle has been excellent. However...

The quality of the trunk/fairing is *garbage*!! I have never overloaded
the accesories, yet, I found that the trunk supporting brackets,
PLASTIC, have cracked apart and left the trunk in danger of falling
off. Naturally, I removed it. The first month of ownership, the non-rub
protected cables to headlamps et all rubbed against the fairing proper,
destroying them. The headlight alignment knob self-destructed after
about 5-6K or so. The paint on these items literally rubs off with
heavy finger pressure. In short, the fairing and trunk are (have) coming off,
and are completely useless, while the basic motorcycle remains in perfect
operating condition, cosmetically and mechanically.

This is *disgusting*! The dealer informed me that in order for this
to happen, I had to have overloaded the accesories (untrue.) He offered
no solution. Yamaha doesn't answer letters, apparently, or at least the
two that I sent out. By the way, I am not the only one... others have told
the same story.

I guess I am not looking for an answer to the problem, but rather
offer this as a warning to those about to buy Yamaha equipment:
inspect the non-Japanese parts VERY carefully, especially around
stress points. Look thoroughly for plastic cracks that are VERY hard
to see. Perhaps, one might be better off buying unadorned motorcycles,
and adding known good aftermarket equipment instead of buying fully
equipped packages.

Well, you live and learn, I guess.
