[net.cycle] Painting an engine

gary@sphinx.UChicago.UUCP (Gary Buchholz) (02/17/86)

I have a 1983 Nighthawk 750 with a black engine. Problem is, after 3
years the paint is coming off and the aluminum color is showing
through.

Does anyone know if I can just repaint this thing with standard black
car header paint ? Someone once told me if I used the wrong kind of
paint it would decrease the cooling efficiency of engine and it might
overheat. Whats the story ?

You can buy engine paint at any decent auto-parts store, but it
sounds like your engine is painted aluminum (for aestetic effect)
and not painted iron (to prevent rust). To get the paint to bond
right to cast iron, I've had to do some elaborate heat treating.
I'd wager it'll be a lot harder to get any regular engine paint to
stick to aluminum. The dealer ought to know, though.
