[net.cycle] Locks and alarms on bikes

rll@mtuxo.UUCP (r.lemar) (03/20/86)

I have owned several bikes, most theft-worthy being an XS-11
and a Goldwing Interstate. Never did more than fork-lock
em, and never lost em. (I did stop someone in the midst
of removing my Wing battery however) The best advice I
have if you're really worried about theft is don't buy a
brand new, 'hot' (meaning high-performance) bike. Stick with
a used 750 or such. Much less theft-prone. Also I got sick
of worrying about my Wing's finish, whether some un-
chained 12 year old was 'riding' it, etc., while I wasn't
there.
Anecdote about vehicle vandalism: At a swap meet a few years
ago, one group of, shall we say, less-than-savory folks were
selling ONLY H-D items. But these were also ONLY items removable
from said Harleys (most likely parked) in less than 4.3 seconds.
Tip for people wanting an effective alarm (meaning one that
people will take notice of): J.C. Whitney's used to sell
a 12 V car horn of (this is hard to believe, believe me)
137 dB. If one uses, say 10 of these, hooked in parallel, as
the siren for the alarm of your choice, that would be 147 dB. (This
will also cause deafness of between 2 days and lifetime, depending
on the listener.)
:-) :-) :-) :-) :-)
(But don't come to me with the lawsuits!!!!!!!! )
