[net.cycle] Tires?

chip@vaxwaller.UUCP (Chip Kozy) (03/08/86)

I saw an interesting ad in one of the cycle mags about Carlisle
"Tourmax" tires. The ad went something like this guy has had these tires
on his battlecruiser (a 'Wing, or Venture) and supposedly had 25K+ miles
on them, and they were still in good shape. In the ad he says that they
helped his handling, gave good perfformance in the rain, etc. Has anybody
out there had any experience with these things? What's the word about them,
good, bad, otherwise? Any help would be appreciated. (This is for a
buddy of mine with a 'Wing who's looking for some tires.)

I put a Carlisle TourMax on the back of my '84 Venture at 10,000 miles,
and another on the front at 17,500. I just replaced the back tire with a
Michelin HiTour..the Carlisle, after 12,000 miles, had about a millimeter
of tread left. The front tire looks about 1/4 gone after 5000 miles.

Now I'm a bit hard on tires. I never `peel out' or even `chirp' them but
I do hit the throttle pretty hard after the bike's rolling. A Venture has
LOTS of power, too. However, the back tire got over 5,000 of its miles
during a summer trip from San Diego to Detroit and back which consisted
mostly of tooling straight down the highway at constant speed. These
conditions should cause about the least possible wear per mile. Even so,
the tire lasted but 12,000 miles.

That does not mean the Carlisle is a bad tire. The stock Bridgestone
Mag Mopus was showing CORDS at 10,000 miles -- THAT'S a bad tire. Also,
the tread pattern on the front Carlisle is a lot more stable than the
pattern on the late, unlamented Bridgestone front tire, which tracked
every crack and groove with an accuracy that would do credit to a train.

I bought the Carlisle because it was on sale (about $62) and the cycle
parts store manager recommended it. For the price, it was a good deal.

This is a little late; I posted it last week but there are two machines
here connected to UUCP and I just found out that one of them WON'T POST.
It goes through the motions, the articles appear in the newsgroups, but
they never leave the machine. Guess which machine I've been posting from
for two weeks?
