Sometimes just using your head isn't enough - my nose saved me the other
day from what could have been a nasty situation. I was riding home down
the freeway when I started noticing a smell like rubber or plastic burning.
I thought it must have been my saddlebags rubbing against the tailpipes.
I couldn't see any trouble, though. I kept smelling it for a few minutes
and was about to pull off to check things when BOOM!... A bus a few hundred
yards ahead blew a recap. There was rubber and smoke all over the place. I
guess I'm lucky I wasn't so close to it - it caused considerable grief to
the car drivers ahead of me.
Moral:
1 - Be aware of early warning signs of bad recaps.
2 - Don't tailgate busses or big rigs.
