I noticed a rattling noise on acceleration in my KZ750 just a couple of
weeks ago. It was doing it when warm and under hard acceleration. The
solution? I had been running your basic no-lead gas; I tried premium
no-lead. Bingo! No more rattle. The problem was simply engine knock.
Try a higher octane gas and see what happens. By the way, performance
wasn't affected on my bike either- but the long term effects of knocking
can be serious.

P.S. A general rule I follow is that any noise that wasn't there and all
of the sudden is, becomes "not normal", by definition.
