[net.music] Pop-O-Pies?

["What's the Dough-Boy afraid of?"]

Just heard something by the Pop-O-Pies on the radio. The vocals were
spoken and talked about how one end of the muscial spectrum, like Duran
Duran, is all formulated and mass-produced. The other end, says the
vocalist, is just as ridiculous. It is filled with political suburban
punk groups that don't have to worry about making anything that anyone
would want to listen to because their parents pay for their instruments
and give them money to live on. These punks insult the Pop-o-Pies for
not playing their guitars fast enough. It's pretty funny. This is
backed by some of the most deliciously discordant guitar playing I've
heard in a long time! (Wow! Speaking of discordant, they're playing
Einsturzende Neubauten on the radio at this very moment.)

Anybody want to tell me more about the Pop-O-Pies?

The Pop-o-Pies has a shady history. According to the jacket of their latest
album, there really is no such band as Pop-o-Pies, just a crazed lunatic
named "Joe Pop-o-Pies". The sole purpose of the creating the band, according
to this description, is to do weird covers of the Grateful Dead song
"Trukin'". They've done a punk, disco, heavy metal and extended remix version
of that song. I think the other stuff on their album(s) is just filler.

Out of San Francisco, Joe Pop-O-Pie first got attention
with a blitzkrieg version of the Dead's "Truckin". It is a
great cover and any Deadhead would be impressed. In fact, I
bought the album on the same day I heard the song. The only
other song worthwhile on that lousy disc is "The Catholics
are Attacking" which is actually a pretty funny attack on
     Catholics.

Alas, he's now a rapper. The cute, tongue-in-cheekness has
now turned into a smugness. He's strictly a novelty.

Don't forget the classic "The Catholics Are Attacking".
