The latest Scientific American has an article on Turing Machines
by John Hopcroft. The article refers to a series of problems
posed by Hilbert in the year 1900 that were unsolved at that
time. I have seen references to these problems elsewhere and
wonder where I might be able to get a survey type of article
about these problems? That is, a list of the problems, which of
them are still unsolved (if any), how the others were solved,
who solved them, etc.

The American Mathematical Society published "Mathematical Developments
Arising from Hilbert Problems" in 1976, a two volume set in the Proceedings
of symposia in pure mathematics (v. 28) from a symposium held at Northern
Illinois University in 1974. This contains Hilbert's original article
as well as papers on what has been accomplished in solving each of the
original twenty-three problems.

I'll second the request for a survey article of Hilbert's problems. I've seen occassional articles about one of the problems, but never the whole list in one place. Chris Scussel AT&T Bell Labs ihnp4!ihuxa!trough

Re: references to Hilbert's problems
There have been 2 or 3 books on this in the last few years. I
associate one of them in my mind with the American Mathematical
Society. Being books, they are probably easier to trace than
articles. I can get exact references for you when I get back
to my home institution in a week or so.
