Oh, now you went and got me started. :-) My favorite was when I
got my present bike a couple of years back. 1982 Suzuki 1100EZ.
Bought it in pouring rain, and on riding it home noticed a periodic
hesitation that I put down to something getting wet. As days went
by the hesitation became more pronounced, although the bike was (then)
dry. Finally it was so bad that it was off more than on. Then it
wouldn't run at all. Ok, time to look into it. Tank came off, check
the spark, check the wiring, Aha! they hadn't crimped down the connections
to the coils. Any of them. A few seconds with a pair of pliers,
put the bike back together, and it was running fine. I wish I hadn't
had to do all that on the side of the freeway, though. Must have
looked strange...
A bike mechanic I talked to said that happens all the time. To put
the coil wires on properly on that bike during setup necessitates taking
the tank off, and many places don't bother. He said that was their
second most common warrenty repair. The most common was warped front
disks, but that's a story for another time.
