[net.rec.photo] A bit about Nikon

In response to some recent comments about Nikon...

Admittedly, Nikon is a sort of status symbol, so when you buy Nikon
you pay some for the name. But you are also paying for good equipment.
It is my understanding that Nikon cameras are very durable, historically
the workhorse of the photo pro.

They are not inflexible cameras. I personally paid the extra money
(not much, really) for a Nikon FE because it has features other
similar cameras don't have; thus, I find it more flexible.
And you can get lenses to match Nikon mounts from many manufacturers.

Finally, Nikons are not entirely dependent on their batteries. The FE, at
least, does have one mechanical shutter speed (1/90th) which
works with or without batteries.

If you're out looking for a 35mm SLR and you think you want the flexibility
of a manual with the convenience of an automatic, don't shy away from
the Nikon name. I surprised a photo enthusiast friend of mine when I
told him how little my FE cost over other cameras.
