Last month I decided that I had had enough of my old Russian made Zenith and decided to go for a modern 35mm SLR. After comparing many brands and models, I picked the Canon A-1. It has the Program, aperture-preferred, shutter-preferred, flash, manual, and stepped-down modes. This sounded like a very good and versatile instrument and I decided to buy it. At the store ( Shutan in Chicago ) I did a last minute check and asked the clerk about other cameras at the same price range. He recommended a Nikon model. To make a long story short, I finally picked the Canon after a half hour of comparing the cameras. You should have seen the way the guy acted. He acted as if I was the biggest fool in the world. Right next to me another guy was told not to buy a Canon and he ended up with a Minolta. I know that Nikon has a little better quality, e.g. all metal body and lenses, but is Canon THAT bad?! Was it worth to go for a Canon with more features than a Nikon at the same price? Any opinions? H. Reza Taheri ...!ihps3!ihuxp!reza (312)-979-1040

I have dropped the zoom lens cracking the filter on front without any damage to the lens itself. I generally shoot in the program mode except in poor light conditions. Then I will shift to a fixed shutter speed to get the lens to open up all the way. Or if I am using the telephoto, I may go to 1/250 for a handheld shot to insure I get the fast shutter speed.
