[net.rec.photo] Sales Pressure Tactics

lmg (01/27/83)

The most frequent comment from camera salesmen seems to be
"We've been getting a lot of complaints about X lately" where X
is the product you want to buy. It usually means he doesn't have
what you want but can give you a cheaper substitute. I frequently
get "the line" when I want some equipment which is a bit uncommon
(e.g. an FLD filter) and/or is made by a premium name manufacturer
(e.g. Tiffen). A very new item which hasn't yet gotten around to all
the stores can elicit "the line"; I got it from Cambridge Camera
in NYC a few years ago when I wanted to buy the (then new) Canon
70-210 f/4 zoom lens. To my knowledge, there has yet to be "a lot
of complaints" about the lens.

If you know what you want and you know why you want it,
but it. If the man won't sell it to you, find one who will.
