Has anybody have any experience using closeup adapter
lenses on a 70-210 zoom telephoto to get closer
to the object for macro work.

I've used close-up lenses on a 135mm telephoto and it works fine. I wouldn't
call it macro photography because it wasn't 1:1, but it is a lot cheaper
than extension tubes or automatic bellows.

P.S. When you use extension tubes, the light falls off A LOT. You better
have strong illumination and/or a steady tripod and stationary subject.
I took macro photos of a class ring once (using bellows and a tele.)
and used a set of movie floodlights.
The focusing is critical and it's hard to do unless you
      have a lot of illumination.
